USA & New England Coaching Development August 13-14 in North Adams Mass.

USA Rugby and the New England Rugby Union are presenting the 2011 New England Rugby’s Coaching Confernce at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Mass. August 13-14, 2011

USA Rugby's Coach Development Program (CDP) is designed to develop coaches and provide them with the latest coaching tools and techniques. Through better coaches and coaching we can develop better players and improve the game at all levels. USA Rugby Coach Certification is a combination of online learning and face-to-face workshops that are designed to give coaches opportunities to demonstrate their skills and competency in a variety of coaching tasks.

Introducing Rugby Workshop: This course is designed for coaches that spend most of their time introducing the game to new players. It is ideal for high school head coaches and college and club assistant coaches. The focus is being able to implement the fundamentals of the game to players that have little or no experience.

Developing Rugby Skills Workshop: This course is designed for coaches focused on working with players with experience and aspiring to help those players play at a higher level. The course work is ideal for head coaches and those that are involved in club and all-star play. There is an emphasis on identifying key factors, practice planning, game sense and skill development.

NRU Womens 7's Announce tryout schedule

Albany, NY - Coaches JoAnne Ward Kos and Chris Ryan would like to announce the tryout schedule for the 2011 NRU Sevens Senior Women's All-Star team.

The schedule combines an open tryout and some tournaments to select this year’s squad. Due to the new Club 7’s Nationals, the tournaments aren’t mandatory, but to be selected you will need to tryout and be able to travel to Chula Vista, CA for the 6 days of the new format NASCs.

The NASC schedule is not set yet, but it will be a different structure from past years. The preliminary plan calls for two days of team practice, both as the NRU and a few practices with all of the athletes from all territories practicing together. This will be followed by the usual 2 day tournament, then a round of games where players will be put into teams.

Two Northeast clubs advance to national Championships

Manassas, VA - The Boston Irish Wolfhounds and the Syracuse Chargers have advanced to the USA Rugby Mens Club Championships June 4-5 in Glendale, Colorado.

The Wolfhounds defeated Norfolk in their quarterfinal match. Fellow NRU side Mystic River lost their quarterfinal match to Palmer College.

Syracuse advanced by defeating to seeded Cincinnati in the opening round, then rallied from an 11-0 deficit to defeat Virginia 13-11.

Congratulations to both teams and best of luck in Glendale.

Inaugural Gate City 7s to Benefit Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund

NASHUA, NH - Charles River Rugby Football Club and the Show Ponies RFC announced today that the inaugural Gate City 7s rugby tournament will be held Saturday, August 13 at Mine Falls Park in Nashua, NH.

Conceived by the Show Ponies, a University of New Hampshire Alumni social squad made up of former players who get together for a handful of events each year, the tournament will serve as a fundraiser to benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (www.fallenheroesfund.org) in honor of team mate Scott Milley (UNH ’09), a lieutenant with the Army's 10th Mountain Division who was killed in combat while serving in Afghanistan last year.

“We are looking forward to a great tournament and are thrilled that we can also use the sport that brought us all together to benefit a terrific cause and remember Scott,” said Show Ponies player Ben Desfosses (UNH ‘05). “There’s nothing quite like the endless support of the rugby community.”

With the help of Charles River RFC, a Division II men’s club and Division III women’s club out of Boston, the Gate City 7s event has been sanctioned by the New England Rugby Football Union and will host up to 32 teams and offer both men’s and women’s divisions.

Rugby 7s is a fast paced, high scoring game played with exactly the same rules and on the same playing fields as the traditional 15-a-side version, just with fewer players and shorter halves. The sport has been gaining popularity ever since the International Olympic Committee announced that Rugby 7s will be added to 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

NRU Announces Men's & Women's Club 7's Series

New York, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union is proud to announce the schedule for it's 2011 Men's and Women's Club 7's Championship Series.

The NRU is proud to be one of the first territories in the country to add women's clubs to their 7's Championships. "The NRU has a long and storied history of Women's 7's and we are thrilled to be able to add the women to our summer club 7's series" said NRU 7's Director Sean Horan.

"Three of the four tournaments in each series will include both the men and the women which should make for some very competitive rugby" Horan added.

NRU Teams advance to USA Rugby DII College Championships

Stonehill, Radcliffe women, Middlebury men move on to semifinals

BOULDER, Colo. – Three teams from the Northeast Rugby Union (NRU) advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Men’s and Women’s DII College Playoffs which wrapped up this past Sunday.

Four mens and four womens will convene in Pittsburgh on April 30 to move one step closer to a DII College National Championship. The semifinals and Championship games will be played on April 30 – May 1 at Founders Field in Pittsburgh.

The women from Notre Dame beat Shippensburg University and Mesa State in the playoffs and will face Stonehill in the semifinals. Stonehill beat UNC Charlotte and Winona State for a shot at a title.

In an absolute nail biter that went into overtime, Western Washington prevailed over George Washington and will storm into Pittsburgh in two weeks to take on Radcliffe College in the semis. Radcliffe defeated University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and Norwich University to qualify for the semis.

On the men’s side, Sierra College, Salisbury University, University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, and Middlebury College are bound for the DII College Semifinals on April 30.

University of Wisconsin – Whitewater defeated two California teams, Cal State – Fullerton and Cal Maritime, to earn a spot in the semis where they will face Sierra College. Sierra took care of Cal State – Long Beach and Pepperdine in the Round of 16 and Round of 8, respectively.

Middlebury and Salisbury square off in the other DII Men’s College semifinal. Middlebury beat St. Joseph’s University and University of South Florida on their path to the semis. Salisbury notched wins over Michigan State and East Carolina University in the playoffs.

The semifinals victors will advance to the National Championship game on May 1.

NRU still accepting bids for 2011 U19 & HS Championships

Albany, NY - The NRU is still accepting bids to host the 2011 U19 Boys and Girls Tournament on May 7 & May 8. We are seeking a venue that can host all 12 teams between two days. Two fields is a must. Winners of the NRU tournament will go on to represent the Northeast at USA Rugby's U19 & High School National Championships.

Any club is eligible to host the tournament; we welcome any college, men’s or women’s club, or local youth program to showcase their facilities. There is a limited subsidy available from the NRU to cover costs resulting from hosting the tournament.

The format of the tournament is as follows:

Boy’s U19 - 4 Teams (NYS, NERFU, Met NY (2 teams)

Boy’s High School - 4 Teams (NYS, NERFU, Met NY (2 teams)

There will be six games on Saturday and six games on Sunday. All teams are guaranteed two games on the weekend. The game lengths will be 60 minutes allowing for overtime, thus keeping the total playing time to less than 90 minutes per day per IRB & USA Rugby Youth Rugby guidelines.

NRU Seeks Host Bids for 2011 Men's Club Championships

New York, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union is now accepting bids to host its 2011 Men's Club Championships.The venue will host the top 12 Division 1, 2, & 3 teams from Northeast. The winning teams from this tournament will move forward into the USA Rugby Championships the following Spring 2012.

This year, it is our goal to host the Championship Tournament Weekend either in the same location as last year or another venue within the NRU territory.

This years championships will be held November 19th & 20th, 2011 and will consist of 4 teams each in Men's Club divisions 1, 2 and 3.

If your LAU would like to bid one one or more locations to host the above tournament, please complete our online application form. Once all applications are complete, the NRU board will vote on the host location during our late April Board Meeting. The deadline to submit your bid is April 15th 2011. Remember, the facility needs to be large enough to host 12 teams.

NRU will help contribute towards the cost of hosting this tournament. Recognizing the need to keep costs down and within budget, our goal is to collaborate with the hosting LAU on the services required. NRU will have the ability to to contribute $1,500.00 towards the Championship which must include fields, emergency medical response, referees, and bathroom facilities.

NRU Appoints Select Side Coaches

Albany, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union has appointed the following coaches for their select side programs:

Men's Collegiate - Mike Hodgins
Women's Collegiate - Tony Brown
Men's 7's - Sean Horan
Women's 7's - Joann Kos

These are three year appointments that will run thru the completion of the 2013 select side season.

"We couldn't have asked for better cantidates for these positions." said NRU President Gary Heavner. "Each coach brings a wealth of experience and organization to the job and we are thrilled to have them on board" he added.

Hodgins is the Head Coach at the University at Buffalo and has been the NRU Men's Collegiate coach for the past three seasons. During Mike's tenure the NRU has seen a three-fold increase in it's select side player pool.

Brown is the Men's and Women's Head Coach at Vassar College and has been named select side coach after filling that role in an interim capacity last season. The NRU enters 2011 as the defending USARFU Women's Collegiate champions.

Horan is a member of Old Blue Rugby and is also the head coach for Columbia University Men's Rugby. Sean has been reappointed as NRU Men's 7's coach and is also the NRU Men's Club 7's Coordinator.

Joann (Ward) Kos is a member of the Albany Women's Rugby Club and is a former NRU and USA Rugby 7's All-Star. Kos has also played with Beantown, Atlantis and Syracuse University. this is Joann's first select side coaching position. Assisting Joann will be former NRU Women's 7's coach Chris Ryan. The NRU are the defending USARFU Women's 7's champions.

Men's Club Championships Schedule

New York, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union today announced the finalists for its 2010 Mens Club Championships to determine territorial champions in Divisions 1, 2 and 3. The championships willbe held Saturday and Sunday November 20 and 21, 2010, with kickoffs both days at 10 am, noon and 2 pm at Randall's Island, NY, Fields 74 and 75.

There will be food, medical assistance, and other conveniences at the island. Admission is free. Schedules, social events, and information about discounted rooms at Fitzpatrick's, the tournament hotel, are all on the event website www.nruplayoffs.org.

Syracuse, NY - The 2010 Northeast Rugby Union College Championship fields have been set. Teams from the New England RFU, Met NY RFU and the New York State Rugby Conference will square off this weekend in the NRU quarterfinals.

Albany Women win NRU Club D2 Championship

Portland, ME - The Albany Women are the 2010 NRU Women's Club D2 champions after defeating the host Portland (ME) women 21-5.

Albany advanced to the championship match with a 29-0 shutout victory over Monmouth. Portland advanced to the finals after Hudson Valley Women forfeited.

Semifinals
Saturday's semifinal saw a hard fought match between the #1 MetNY seed Monmouth and the #2 NERFU seed Albany. Monmouth was very tough in the forwards and the Albany pack had a hard time at the rucks because of it. Albany was able to use their backs to apply consistent pressure early on.

Thirteen minutes in Ruth Robertson scored for Albany on a try that JoAnne Kos was able to convert. The next 20 minutes of the match saw much of the same, with Albany spending large chucks of time inside Monmouth's 22. The steady pressure yielded a penalty kick and unconverted try for Albany, both scored by JoAnne Kos. Monmouth finished the half strong, launching multiple attacks on the Albany try-line but came up short as the defense of the other team held until the half-time whistle blew with albany holding a 15-0 lead.

The second-half of the match was similar to the first in that Albany would spend large portions of time pressuring Monmouth in their own end followed by short but intense attacks by Monmouth. Albany would be the only team to score in this half however with a converted try (JoAnne Kos) early on and another one with about 10 minutes left (Willow Eyers try/Kos conversion). Final score: 29-0

Championship Match
The final was a re-match for the regular season rivals. Portland won the earlier contest 30-15 and that match had had 6 lead changes up until midway thru the second when Portland pulled away from Albany for good. If the final was anything like the regular season match, it was going to be an exciting one for spectators to watch.

Both teams took the field confident in a win and first half was indicative of that- neither team would score a try and although Albany worked incredibly hard in front of the Portland try-zone, their efforts amounted to just two converted penalty kicks (JoAnne Kos). The score was 6-0 at the half, meaning just one converted try would put Portland in the lead in what was turning out to be a great defensive battle.

Albany hit the second-half hard, determined not to let a close game get away. Within a minute JoAnne Kos ran in from about 15 meters out to give the team a little breathing room. Ten minutes later and Willow Eyers got her second try of the tournament and score was 16-0 with about 30 minutes left in the match. Albany knew better than to breath easy at this point as Portland had scored 3 tries on them in just over ten minutes the last time they had met.

True to form, Portland came charging back pressuring consistently in Albany's 22, the pressure worked and Portland scored an unconverted try. The score was 16-5 with 20 minutes left in the match. The remainder of the match was back and forth, played mostly between the 22's. including one sequence where the backs traded kicks for 6 phases in a row. With 7 minutes left in the match Ruth Robertson had a long break-away, to make the score 21-5. The score would hold and the match ended with Albany exhausted but happy that they were back-to-back NRU Champions and would be headed to Arizona as the #3 seed in the country.

Syracuse, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union requires ALL teams particpating in the 2010 NRU Playoffs to have the following documents completed and available for ALL NRU playoff matches. Documents are to be carried with you throughout the NRU/USA playoffs, and will need to be presented upon registration prior to each round of competition.

Current USA Rugby Team CIPP list
Original copies of the USA Rugby Collegiate Eligibility form - this must completed in its entirety and certified by the school Registrar (including raised seal from registrar)
Players Photo ID's (school ID, drivers license, military ID, passport)

Teams should have this documentation with them for all rounds of NRU playoffs. Failure to produce the documentation when requested may result in forfeiture of any NRU match and disqualification from the playoffs.

Bowdoin College to host 2010 NRU College Championships

Syracuse, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union has announced that the 2010 NRU College Championships will be hosted by Bowdoin College November 13-14.

Seeds to the 2011 USA Rugby College Championships will be on the line as womens Division 1 and Mens and Womens Division 2 champions will be decided on the scenic Brunswick Maine campus.

"We are very pleased that Bowdoin was available as a host facility again this year" said NRU College VP Greg Fehrman. "Everything about rugby at Bowdoin is first rate" he added.

Northeast Rugby Union President Gary Heavner said "Bowdoin have been terrific hosts for the NRU in the past and we expect 2010 to be no different".

Quarterfinal matches will take place November 6th at the home of the higher seeds. Winners will advance to the championships the following week.

Deadline extended for NRU Collegiate Championships host bids

Syracuse, NY - The Northeast Rugby Union has extended its proposal period to host the 2010 NRU College Championships. The Championships will be held on November 13th and 14th. Host bids are due NO later than September 22, 2010 with selections being made by September 29, 2010. Bid proposals should include the following:

* Map of tournament site
* Local hotel information
* Number of fields available (minimum of three fields required)
* Warm-up space availability
* Confirmation of required field restraints / goal pads / flags
* Parking availability
* Rest Room facilities confirmation
* Security (necessary on college campus)
* EMT (confirmation)
* Tent for NRU Rugby officials / referees
* Concession proposals
* Previous hosting experience (LAU championships, tournaments, NRU events, etc.)
* Sponsorship / revenue plans
* Plans for local host PR / Media exposure
* Any other pertinent information
