5/21/2008 - Old Blue to host Select XV vs. England Counties

USA Rugby, in partnership with New York’s Old Blue Rugby Club, will host two matches between the Select XVs and the England Counties XVs on Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9. Both games are slated for 7 pm (EDT) kickoffs at Columbia University’s Baker Field Athletic Complex (533 W. 218th Street - west of Broadway).

Admission is free of charge, but donations will be accepted to benefit Play Rugby, Inc - a local youth development program.

The Select XV is a U.S. developmental squad comprised of up-and-coming athletes from across the country. Many of the players named to the team currently compete at the premier level of rugby in the U.S., the Rugby Super League, or were selected following impressive showings on the national championships stage.

The England Counties XV, the representative flagship of the County and Community game outside the Guinness Premiership, will compete against the U.S. side as part of a three-match tour to North America, which also features a stop in Canada.

The Northeast went undefeated in pool play on their way to the semi-finals, beating Southern California (19-5), West (15-7) and the USA Under 23s (19-0). In the semi-finals the Northeast faced the South and walked away with a 24-5 victory.
